Read Jeremiah 23:23-29

Who or what is the Lord speaking against in this passage? What are the two contrasting aspects of God in vv. 23-24? What does this contrast suggest about God’s character? How does Psalm 139:7-12 relate to vv. 23-24? What is the source of inspiration for the false prophets? What does Deuteronomy 13:3 say? What do the false prophets aim to do (v. 27)? How does Jeremiah 23:16-17 describe the message of these false prophets? What is the mark of the authentic prophet (v. 28)? What test for authenticity does v. 29 suggest? (Clue:  recall 23:16-17)

God is speaking against false prophets. I think we have "false prophets" among us today--those who tell us "It's all about me!" "If it feels good, do it" etc.
God is "far away", and yet as close to us as our own beating heart. We cannot "hide" from such a nearby God! The verses in Ps. 139 are similar: we cannot hide from God. The false prophets' inspiration is their dreams--but Deuteronomy 13 does not bode well for the "dreamers"! They want us to forget God. Deut. 23:16-17 says that the false prophets try to delude innocent people into being complacent with promises that "no calamity" will happen to them. God's Word and time will always expose the false prophet. God's Word is as powerful and all-consuming as fire, or as a hammer and chisel against stone. Pray for the Spirit's guidance to what is authentic and real, and what is false!
