Read Luke 14:1, 7-14

What does v. 1 tell you about the status level of this dinner? What suggests that the atmosphere might not be comfortable for Jesus? How would you describe the guests based on their behavior in v. 7? How do Jesus’ comments (vv 8-10) relate to the reading from Proverbs? What would this advice advoid for a guest? How do vv. 12-14 contrast with vv 8-10? In what way do vv. 12-14 reflect “Kingdom teaching”? How do things like customs and status get in the way of loving others in your family? Church? Work-place? Community

I probably will not answer the questions directly. I got to wondering why Jesus was invited. Probably because he had a following and therefore had some influence. Not because of his teaching. Based on verse 12 that is probably the reason for the other guests also. I think the atmosphere was uncomfortable for Jesus because, after observing the guests, and guessing the motivation of the host, he felt the need to criticize that motivation, knowing that it would not be a popular thing to do.
