Read 1 Corinthians 1:1-9

Paul opens his first letter to the Corinthians by defending his authorization as one called to be an apostle.  What title would you give to vv. 1-3? How do vv 4-9 differ from 1-3? In this letter Paul deals with many problems that disturb the life of this troublesome congregation. What might have been his purpose in starting in starting off with the themes in vv 4-9? Why is Paul thankful for the Corinthians?
